Management and Coordination of Family Life

Rights of students in the process of parenting

In 2012, the Department of Higher Education approved the general rights of students regarding fertility treatments, pregnancy, giving birth, adoption and fostering. The laws determine the rights of students in the parenting process, including the coordination of exams and assignments, permission to be absent from lessons, arranging appropriate concessions for students after giving birth and more. In 2014, the Department of Higher Education extended the length of maternity leave, from four fixed weeks to either six weeks or 30% of the semester- the higher of the two options.

The rights of female students in the process of parenting during the clinical years
According to section 10 of the catalogue of clinical studies:
9. A female student, starting from the 20th week of pregnancy and a nursing mother (until the child is one years old) is able to receive an exemption from rounds and to decrease the number of hours she is required to be present in the department, in accordance with the operating hours and instruction program of the department. In order to receive the required permission, the student is required to contact the Student Coordinator.
10. A female student after giving birth is entitled to six weeks of vacation from her studies, upon presentation of the required permission. The faculty will put as much effort as possible in order to help the student coordinate her study schedule when she returns from this break, such that her studies won’t be affected. It is the student’s responsibility to approach the Student Coordinator as soon as possible during her pregnancy in order to coordinate an optimal study schedule. A break from studies may lead to a delay in finishing the degree, due to the need to fulfil all requirements.
7. A student is permitted to be absent for up to 10% of the clinical rounds, as coordinated with the department. Absence of more than 10% during clinical rounds, even for a valid reason, requires a repeat of the round and/or course and the student will not be permitted to take the summarizing exam at the end of the round. If a student shows up anyway to the exam, his grade will not be entered into the system/calculated.

Who can one contact and how?
During the clinical years, for all matters connected to absence from rounds/ study days and building a suitable timetable, students can contact Prof. Leah Bentur. In order to set a meeting with Professor Bentor, the student should first contact  Liat Einstein, the Student Coordinator of the Clinical Years: MDstudentaffairs@technion.ac.il.
